Our lab had a wonderful time at the Poultry Science Association Annual General Meeting in San Antonio, Texas this year from July 23-26. Karen was awarded the PSA Early Achievement Award For Research, which is given to recognize the achievements of PSA members in the early stages of their careers in poultry research. We had 6 members of our lab group give presentations: Tory Shynkaruk presented in place of Tim Fiss: "The impact of infrared beak treatment on turkey behaviour and heterophil to lymphocyte ratios" Kailyn Beaulac: "The effects of stocking density on turkey tom core body temperature and litter quality to 16 weeks of age" Eugenia Herwig:"Pea starch increases night feeding behaviour in laying hens" Bethany Baker: "Evaluating five carbon dioxide induction methods for the gaseous euthanasia of day-old broiler chicks testing time to aversion, insensibility, and death" Sarah Struthers: Poster. "Effects of infrared beak treatment on the behaviour, welfare, and mortality of egg-strain pullets and hens to 60 weeks of age" Celma Santos: Poster. "Diurnal photoperiod and in ovo lighting - Impact on hatchability traits of male Leghorn chicks" All of the presenters did an amazing job and a number of them received awards! Student Research Paper Certificate of Excellence Award Recipients: Left to right: Eugenia Herwig (Ph.D)m Kailyn Beaulac (MSc.), and Sarah Struthers (M.Sc) Kailyn Beaulac was also awarded the Aviagen Turkeys Communication Award. Aviagen Turkeys presents this award to a maximum of two graduate student Certificate of Excellence winners at the annual PSA meeting whose oral paper was given with the turkey as the principal unit of research. The award serves to increase awareness of the opportunities available to students who choose to do research with turkeys. We would also like to note that one of our summer students, Jo Ann Chew, who completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta was awarded a Student Research Paper Certificate of Excellence. It is very uncommon for an undergraduate student to win one of these awards and we are very proud of her and are excited for her to join our lab for her Master's Degree!
